National Unity Party leader Artashes Geghamian
Azgayin Miabanutyun (National Unity Party)
Another opposition force represented in the outgoing parliament by seven deputies. The NUP is built around its outspoken leader Artashes Geghamian, who came in third in the 2003 presidential election, which he, too, considers fraudulent. A senior Communist Party functionary in Soviet times, Geghamian enjoys a considerable populist appeal (especially among low-income Armenians) that should earn his party presence in the next National Assembly. But Geghamian is distrusted by other prominent opposition figures, including Demirchian, who suspect him of having cut a behind-the-scene deal with the authorities in the past. The NUP has one seat in the Central Election Commission and lower election commissions.
