Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov is insisting that an ambitious urban redevelopment program in Ashgabat and its suburbs must meet the "highest standards," Turkmen news agencies reported January 6.
According to the Turkmenistan.ru website, the president toured the capital citys many building sites on January 4, during which he stated that all new facilities "should represent the latest achievements in science, technology and design art."
Ring roads, bridges and the creation of landscaped parks along the Karakum canal are all on the drawing board, as well as the construction of a new cultural center in Archman, a market in Anau and a number of industrial facilities on the north-side of the city, including a bakery and glass factory. A site for a new National Institute of Sports and Tourism has yet to be determined.
Separately, the contract to build a new 11-storey, 5,000-meter-squared carpet museum has been awarded to French favorites, Bouygues. The building will be modeled on traditional Turkmen motifs.
