Tajik and Uzbek officials are trying to work out a deal to allow the resumption of Turkmen electricity supplies to beleaguered Tajikistan.

A delegation of Tajik energy specialists -- headed by Sharifkhon Samiyev, the chairman of electricity company, Barqi Tajik -- was in Uzbekistan on January 7 to explore the parameters of a deal that would allow Turkmen power supplies to flow through Uzbekistan en route to Tajikistan, the Asia-Plus news agency reported. The talks are expected to continue through January 8.

Turkmenistan suspended the export of electricity to Tajikistan on January 1 due to the inability of Dushanbe and Tashkent to agree on transit terms. [For background see the News Briefs archive].
