TURKMENISTAN: PRESIDENT ENCOURAGES BABY BOOM

Turkmenistan’s president, Gulbanguly Berdymukhamedov, has issued a call to his people for a baby boom, saying women should have at least three children.

"We must develop and provide a system of privileges for the protection of motherhood and childhood, encourage women to have three, four, five and more children," Berdymukhamedov said during the opening session of Turkmenistan’s new parliament on January 9, according to a transcript obtained by the CA-news.org website.

"The State must take upon itself all expenditures of childhood medical care of children up to the age of 15-years. A mother, who cares for a child under three-years-of-age, must want for nothing," he added.

He also recommended that housing should be preferentially allocated to families with three or more children and that the state should embark on a large scale residential building program to meet expected demand.
