As Tajikistan steels itself for rising electricity prices and falling temperatures, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has named a new general director for the countrys troubled state-owned power company, Barqi Tajik. Sanat Rakhimov, the head of Barqi Tajiks energy projects unit, will now oversee the company as it faces an uphill struggle to modernize Tajikistans energy infrastructure, CA-news.org reported on January 20. Rakhimov replaces Sharifhon Samiyev, who was sacked by presidential decree late last week along with six other senior managers for "grave shortcomings in their work" following a government review of the countrys economic performance in 2008. Nationwide power shortages last winter severely crippled the countrys economy and caused a humanitarian crisis. The new appointment comes as part of an overall restructuring of Barqi-Tajik, overseen by the Ministry of Energy and Industries and the State Committee for Investments and State-Owned Property Management.
