Although the Prikaspiiski pipeline seems stalled on the drawing board, Turkmenistan has offered to increase its natural gas contribution to the project, according to official statements.
Turkmen officials made the offer during a regular meeting convened in Almaty of the parties seeking to expand the Prikaspiiski network, according to a January 29 report distributed by the semi-official Turkmenistan.ru website. The conference brought together executives from TurkmenGaz, the Russian behemoth Gazprom, and the Kazakhstani state-controlled entity KazMunaiGaz.
The Prikaspiiski expansion project was originally announced in 2007. [For background see the Eurasia Insight archive]. Since then, however, little has been done to get the project off the ground. The Turkmenistan.ru report did not specify the additional level of natural gas that Ashgabat was willing to commit to the project.
