The Talco aluminum plant in Tajikistan has dramatically scaled backed production, as the country’s energy crisis is starting to bite. The struggling, indebted company is operating with nearly a third less energy, and employees are working for just one hour a day.

"Energy consumption is reduced to 15 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per day. Previously, the company consumed 21 million kWh per day. There are plans reduce energy consumption to 14 million kWh," the Asia Plus news agency quoted Talco spokesperson Saehat Kadyrova as saying February 3.

Kadyrova added the company had been jeopardized by both the domestic energy crisis and the global financial crisis: "In this crisis situation, management is taking all possible steps to maintain viability, stability and productive capacity."

As of January 1, 2009, Talco owed state energy company Barqi-Tajik $26 million. Production at the pant has declined by up to 30 percent in recent months.
