Yerevan, 22nd June: Following a discussion of the complaints
submitted by parliamentary candidates about violations in
Constituency No 56 (Kotayk Region) during the election on 30th
May, the Armenian Constitutional Court (CC) today decided to
rule the outcome as invalid. Announcing the decision, Gagik
Arutyunyan, the chairman of the CC, said that all the documents
on this case would be sent to the Prosecutor-General's Office.
The parliamentary candidate Aram Arutyunyan, who was
lodging the suit, accused the Regional Electoral Commission
(REC) of electoral fraud in favour of Agasi Simonyan.
Following a discussion of the materials submitted to the
CC, the latter concluded that "the election in Constituency No
56 under the majority system was held with violations from the
side of the REC". According to the statement by Aram
Arutyunyan, in the REC's protocol of results the latter
received 3,721 votes and Simonyan, who received the mandate of
MP, received 3,757 votes. "According to the Electoral Code if
the difference is 36 votes, then the outcome should be
annulled," Aram Arutyunyan's statement says. The statement also
pointed out that during the elections there were other
violations, for which legal proceedings were instituted in the
Kotayk court of original jurisdiction.

"The CC's decision is final and is not subject to appeal,"
Gagik Arutyunyan said to the sound of thunderous applause from
the audience.
