Poll shows Armenian Unity bloc will win parliamentary elections

Yerevan, 21st May: A total of 77 per cent of respondents in a
survey carried out by the Sotsiometr independent sociological
centre said they believed the Unity bloc would win the upcoming
parliamentary elections on 30th May in Armenia. The bloc
consists of the Republican and People's parties headed
respectively by Defence Minister Vazgen Sarkisyan and the
ex-candidate for presidency in the 1998 elections, Karen
Demirchyan. Forty per cent of respondents place their
confidence in a victory of the Communist Party (leader Sergey
Badalyan), 47 per cent in the National Democratic Union (leader
Vazgen Manukyan), 27 per cent in the Armenian Revolutionary
Federation-Dashnaktsutyun. Those polled believe that 19 parties
taking part in the elections will get less than 10 per cent of
votes.
