Candidates set in Armenian parliamentary poll as withdrawal deadline passes

Yerevan, 21st May:

The period for candidates under both the
proportional and majority systems to announce their withdrawal
from the parliamentary race expired at 0800 [0300 gmt] on 20th
May. A Noyan Tapan correspondent learnt from the secretary of
the Armenian Central Electoral Commission, Armenui Zograbyan,
that 1,002 candidates are named in the lists of 21 parties and
blocs standing in the forthcoming parliamentary elections on
30th May [i.e. under the proportional electoral system].
A total of 627 candidates will contest the 75 electoral
precincts of Armenia [i.e. under the majority or
first-past-the-post system]: 197 candidates in Yerevan, 34 in
Aragatsotn, 47 in Ararat, 44 in Armavir, 45 in Gegharkunik, 60
in Lori, 70 in Kotayk, 69 in Shirak, 24 in Syunik, five in
Vayots Dzor and 32 in Tavush.

[Some of the candidates under the majority system are also
named in the party lists for election under the proportional
system.]
