AZERBAIJAN ELECTION WATCH

Azeri Musavat Party urges authorities to stop tearing up election posters

Text of report by Azerbaijani newspaper 'Yeni Musavat' on 27th October entitled "Illegal actions against Musavat should stop" by Rafig

[subhead] Vurgun Ayyub is demanding this from both the CEC [Central Electoral Commission] and the Baku police

In connection with illegal actions against the party's propaganda material (posters), Secretary-General of the Musavat Party Vurgun Ayyub has appealed to CEC Chairman M. [Mazahir] Panahov, the acting head of the Baku city executive authorities, M. [Mammad] Abbasov, and the chief of the Baku City Main Police Department, M. [Maharram] Aliyev. The appeal says:

The Musavat Party, whose single list of candidates for the 5th November elections to the Milli Majlis [parliament] was registered under the 8th October decision of the CEC, has started its election campaign throughout the country in line with the law on the elections. To that end, the party has put up its election campaign materials (posters) in the city of Baku. Certain forces operating from a single centre have recently been openly carrying out illegal actions aimed at hindering the Musavat Party's propaganda work, the party's propaganda posters placed in different parts of Baku are being torn up and stained in the presence of employees of housing offices and policemen. Heads of housing offices say that they are carrying out these illegal actions on orders from heads of district executive authorities.

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that such sabotage and illegal actions against the Musavat Party are being deliberately carried out with the aim of obstructing the party's election campaign. We demand that you take serious measures to stop these illegal actions.
