Text of report from Azerbaijani newspaper 'Yeni Musavat' on
28th August by Kamil entitled "The MDEER pickets the CEC"
[Subhead] The CEC leadership failed to receive the pickets'
representatives
The Movement for Democratic Elections and Electoral Reform
[MDEER] staged a picket in front of the Central Electoral
Commission [CEC] yesterday. The picket was attended by members
of the Musavat Party, the People's Front of Azerbaijan Party
[PFAP] and the Unity Party, who protested irregularities in the
formation of electoral commissions being set up for the 12th
December municipal elections. Although the police did not allow
the pickets to gather in front of the CEC, the pickets'
representatives went to negotiate with the CEC leadership to
hand in a MDEER statement.
Seyidali Mammadli, member of the Musavat Party council,
and Zalimkhan Mammadov, deputy PFAP chairman, came back after
one hour of negotiations. They said that in spite of the fact
that they had a telephone conversation with an aide to Jafar
Valiyev, chairman of the CEC, and the head of the CEC
organizing department, nobody received them. Mammadov said that
these actions by the CEC leadership would be gauged as
disrespect and a gross violation of the law and that the MDEER
would adopt a statement in this connection.
