Astana, 11th October: The elections to the majilis [lower chamber] of Kazakhstan's parliament which took place on Sunday [10th October] were held without any incidents, "in absolutely calm conditions", Kazakh Minister of Internal Affairs Kairbek Suleymenov said at a news conference on Monday [11th October].

He said that on election day public order was "at the proper level" and no criminal manifestations connected to the election campaign were observed.

Suleymenov said that 30,000 officers of the law-enforcement bodies monitored 9,527 polling stations, incuding 18,000 police officers who were present directly at the stations. Approximately 600 motor vehicles and more than 2,000 traffic police officers were employed to deliver bulletins safely, he said.

The minister reported that at the same time "several tens of thefts" and two premeditated murders , which were discovered immediately after being committed, were registered last Sunday.

Suleymenov stressed that the work done by officers of the law-enforcement bodies to establish order at polling stations was no cause for complaint by observers who had the opportunity to observe the voting procedure in closed institutions, such as prisons, solitary confinement cells and military units.
