Candidates declare Kazakh elections illegitimate

Text of report by the Kazakh news agency Interfax-Kazakhstan on 11th October

Taraz, 11th October: In Taraz (the administrative centre of Zhambyl Region, south Kazakhstan) six candidates for seats in the Majlis (lower house) of parliament appealed to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) demanding that the parliamentary elections be declared illegitimate, a proxy of one of the candidates, who signed the statement to the CEC, Bolat Bolatayev, told the Interfax-Kazakhstan agency on Monday [11th October].

According to him, this demand was due to the fact that parliamentary candidates had revealed "serious violations" in the election procedure at a polling station of the Zhambyl constituency. Bolatayev said that the candidates had come to No 63 polling station in the early hours of 11th October and had found about 400 ballot papers under the table of the commission.

He said the pile contained both clean ballot papers and those for the Fatherland Republican Party [Otan].

Last Sunday [10th October] elections to the Majlis (lower house) of parliament and to maslikhats of all levels (local representative bodies of power) were held in Kazakhstan.
