Excerpts from report by the Kazakh news agency Interfax-Kazakhstan Shymkent, 12th October: According to the preliminary results of the elections to the majlis (lower house) of parliament by party lists, the Agrarian Party of Kazakhstan and the Fatherland (Otan) Party are in the lead in South Kazakhstan Region, the chairman of the regional electoral commission, Berik Torgautov, said at a news conference in Shymkent (administrative centre of South Kazakhstan Region). Torgautov said that a second round of voting must be held in five out of nine single-seat [electoral] districts of the South Kazakhstan Region, as not a single candidate had won 50 per cent of the votes of those who cast their ballot. He said that as a whole in the South Kazakhstan Region, around 69 per cent of voters cast their ballots last Sunday [10th October] and in Shymkent - 44 per cent. Torgautov said that there had been no serious violations in the elections in the South Kazakhstan Region.
