Excerpts from report by Kazakh Khabar TV on 18th October
[Presenter] The parties discussed the results of the elections
[held on 10th October for the lower house of Kazakh parliament,
the majlis] today.
[Passage omitted: correspondent says over video of
communist leader Serikbolsyn Abdildin giving a news conference
that the communists voiced dissatisfaction with the results of
the elections] Serikbolsyn Abdildin, who has already won a seat
in the majlis, hopes to form his own faction in the parliament
which might include deputies from the Republic bloc.
Ideological disagreements between the members of the bloc have
been forgotten by now and the main thing is to join the
authorities.
[Video shows leaders of the Fatherland Party giving news
conference] There is quite a different situation in the camp of
the communists' main opponent. The Fatherland [Otan] Party is
quite content that its representatives will take four seats by
party lists. They are the speaker of the majlis, Marat Ospanov,
Tatyana Kvyatkovskaya, Maktay Sagdiyev and Serik Konakbayev.
The Fatherland Party seriously hopes to win the majority
of the seats in the parliament. For that, the party's 29
candidates need to win in the second round [to be held on 24th
October]. Sergey Tereshchenko [leader of the Fatherland Party]
says that the task is fully feasible. However, even if the
candidates from the Fatherland Party fail to win seats, the
party might form a bloc with other forces, except the
communists. Marat Ospanov said that Fatherland has the chance
of becoming the ruling party. This will be in favour of reforms. On the whole, the Fatherland Party assesses positively the
distribution of forces [seats by party lists].
