Astana, 25th October. According to the preliminary results of
Kazakhstan's Central Electoral Commission, 2.9m people or 50.03
per cent of the voters registered in [electoral] rolls turned
out for the second round of the parliamentary elections held in
Kazakhstan last Sunday [24th October], the chairwoman of the
Central Electoral Commission [CEC], Zagipa Baliyeva, told a
news conference in Astana on Monday.

Baliyeva told journalists that Vladislav Kosarev, Kuanysh
Alpysbekov, Zaure Kadyrova, Amirgali Kenzhebek, Ualikhan
Kalizhan, Bolat Takenov, Yermek Kelemseit, Zheken Kaliuly,
Fariza Ungarsynova, Aleksandr Melyutin, Yerzhan Rakhmetov,
Askar Kabanbayev, Nikolay Shcherbinin, Alimpiada Cherkashina,
Aldiyar Tusupov, Gani Kaliyev, Khayrat Shalabayev, Vladimir
Asanov, Valeryan Zemlyanov, Shaymerden Urazalinov, Tagir
Sisenbayev, Sergey Drozhzhin, Rauail Shaekin, Mukhambet Kopey,
Yerlan Nigmatullin, Uzakbay Karamanov, Bakhyt Kupenova,
Abdizhalel Bakir, Serikpay Bisetayev, Sergey Zhalybin, Viktor
Vesnin, Khamit Amirguzhin, Ramazan Sarpekov, Kayrulla
Yerezhepov, Yuriy Lavrinenko, Vladimir Dvoretsskiy, Serikbay
Alibayev, Tulebek Kosmambetov, Myrzageldy Kemel, Orazaly
Sabden, Nurbakh Rustemov, Tatyana Muzhchil, Gani Kasymov and
Isakhan Alimzhanov had been elected deputies to the
parliament's Majlis [lower house].

In the opinion of the CEC chairwoman, international
observers' assessment of the parliamentary elections held in
Kazakhstan will be "sufficiently restrained". One needs to take
into account the fact "the first steps of democracy" are being
taken in the republic, she noted.

As reported earlier, the OSCE's mission [for observing
these elections], recognized these elections as falling short
of the OSCE's requirements.

The second round of elections to the Majlis was held in 47
of 67 constituencies in Kazakhstan on 24th October.
Baliyeva said that the CEC was sending a commission to
three of the 47 constituencies to investigate violations
uncovered in the course of the elections. If "serious
violations" are observed in the course of the repeated voting,
the CEC will "possibly, deem the election results in some
constituencies invalid", the chairwoman of the CEC said.
