Muslim School Closed Following Vote

For two years at the Karasu village of Almaty region there existed a Muslim boarding school for about 30 male students. Now this school is closed. Court has ruled that it should be closed because of extremist Islam ideas that were spread there. Court also says that school administration did not recognise the authority of Almaty Muslim organization. There where several citizen from other countries, including Afghanistan, attending this school.

According to information gathered by the Kazakhstan Bureau for Human Rights, the public of Almaty is sure that the fact of school being closed down is a result of authorities being afraid of the spread of extremist Muslim ideas. According to the media, director of the school has disappeared before the proceedings began.

This case is still not clear. A lot of students of this school (men over 20 among them) say that all of the ideas taught at this school fall within frames of traditional Islam.

However, representatives of Muslim Spiritual leader in Kazakhstan support these actions of authorities.
