Kazakh former presidential candidate to run for seat in parliament

 
Text of report by the Kazakh news agency Interfax-Kazakhstan on 18th August Almaty, 18th August: Gani Kasymov, one of the presidential candidates of Kazakhstan in the elections held in January [1999], on Wednesday [18th August] was officially registered as
candidate for a seat in the Majlis (lower house) of parliament at No 63 single-seat Auezov constituency of Almaty, the district electoral commission told the Interfax-Kazakhstan agency.

As the commission reported, Kasymov was registered as a self-nominee. He was the first to be registered as a candidate by the district commission, the commission said, although "five
or six interested persons" proposed themselves as candidates at this constituency. The elections for the Majlis have been scheduled for 10th October. Of the 77 seats in the house, 67 must be occupied by deputies elected in single-seat constituencies and 10 -
according to party lists.

During the presidential elections, the 49 year-old Kasymov was the head of the Customs Committee of the Ministry of Finance of the republic but later, due to the reorganization of
the customs service and its subordination to the Ministry of State Revenues, he was releived from the post. At present Kasymov does not occupy any state posts.
