Kazakh Communist Party planning strong field in parliamentary elections

Text of report by Kazakh Khabar TV on 14th August
[Presenter] The Communist Party of Kazakhstan held its
extraordinary 26th congress today [14th August] and nominated
its candidates.

[Correspondent, over video of meeting] In the Shanghai
hotel [presumably in Almaty], which was named after one of the
biggest cities of a country [China] which has preserved the
communist system, Kazakh communists announced that they would
take an active part in the forthcoming [parliamentary]
elections [September, October 1999]. The leader of the party,
Serikbolsyn Abdildin, announced before his keynote speech that
they had received an ardently-phrased express letter from the
leader of Russian communists, Gennadiy Zyuganov. [people
applaud]. He started his report by praising a communist member
of the present parliament, Valeriyan Zemlyanov, as the only
person who deserves to be re-elected. It is noteworthy here
that Zemlyanov has accepted nomination by the trade unions.
Maybe it is because of this that the trade unions and the
Communist Party have been described as being in the same ranks
and as organizations in close cooperation.

As for how many candidates the communists are going to
nominate for the Majlis [lower house of Kazakh parliament],
according to the result of the meeting they are planning to
field 15 or 20 candidates in single-seat constituencies and no
less than five candidates for party list seats. We know that
the communists are to unite with the opposition Republic

[Respublika] bloc. When we asked how this bloc was going to
act, we learned that the parties which are going to unite in
the Republic bloc will define their common purposes after they
have all held their congresses. The last party congresses are
scheduled for 18th August.
