Astana, 10th September: Five hundred and sixty-five candidates
in single-mandate constituences have been registered for 67
seats in the Majlis (lower house) of the Kazakh parliament,
Chairwoman of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) Zagipa
Baliyeva told a press conference held in Astana on Friday [10th
September].
The registration of candidates for seats in parliament
ended at midnight [local time, 1700 gmt] on 9th September.
Baliyeva said that this "is the greatest number" of
candidates in parliamentary elections over the whole history of
Kazakhstan. On average, there are eight candidates per seat in
the Majlis, she said. The greatest number of candidates for one
seat was registered at Medeo constiutency No 64 in Almaty where
16 people have joined in the election fight for a deputy's
mandate.
In all, 597 people were nominated for the Majlis. Not a
single candidate for a seat in [the lower house] of parliament
was refused registration. Thirty-two people refused
registration "on their own initiative", the chairwoman of CEC
said.
Of the 565 registered candidates, 80 were nominated by
public organizations, 115 by political parties and 370
candidates will take part in the elections as self-nominees.
The canvassing by the candidates will last for 30 days -
until 10th October, the day of the elections to the Majlis.
Apart from the 67 seats, another 10 seats in the Majlis
will be occupied by deputies who will be elected by party lists
