Text of report by the Kyrgyz newspaper 'Slovo Kyrgyzstana'
The president of the Issyk-Kulinvest [Issyk-Kul investment] bank, a deputy
of the parliament's Assembly of People's Representatives [non-standing
chamber], Bolot Baykhodzhayev, was nearly barred from standing in
parliamentary elections for "failing to meet the requirement that he had to
have lived in the district he was running in at least for the last three
years", according to a Karakol court.
However, Baykhodzhayev disagreed with this and appealed to the Kyrgyz
Supreme Court. Unlike some contestants who have failed to meet the same
requirement, he won the lawsuit.
A former Supreme Council [parliament] speaker, Medetkan Sherimkulov, who is
currently the Kyrgyz ambassador to Turkey, is one of those who have lost.
The ex-speaker of the single-chamber parliament failed to prove that he has
lived in his home Sokuluk District [in northern Chuy Region] over the last
three years and had to withdraw from the election campaign.[p1]
