Text of report by the Kyrgyz news agency Kabar on 15th March
Bishkek, 14th March: "As we have learned during a conversation with the
chairman of the [Kyrgyz] Electoral Commission, Sulayman Imanbayev, a
decision was taken to set up a working group to introduce amendments to
the republic's election code. The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions
and Human Rights is ready to render assistence to the Kyrgyz authorities to
this end," the head of the OSCE mission for observing the elections to the
Supreme Council [Kyrgyz parliament], Mark Stevens, told a news conference
on the results of the elections.
The mission expresses the hope that all interested public and political
organizations of Kyrgyzstan will be involved in the renovation of the code.
Having welcomed such a decision, international organizations think that
norms regulating candidates' refusal to participate in elections or their
withdrawal from registration, as well as the formation of electoral
commissions and the procedure for registering parties and candidates demand
serious consideration.
