Fifteen political parties to run for seats in Kyrgyz parliament

Text of report by Kyrgyz news agency Kabar

Bishkek, 1st December: The Kyrgyz Justice Ministry has submitted to the
Central Electoral Commission the list of the political parties which are
eligible to take part in the forthcoming parliamentary elections [on 20th
February 2000]. The document names 15 parties, including the Erkin
Kyrgyzstan Progressive and Democratic Party, the Asaba National Revival
Party, the Party of Communists of Kyrgyzstan, the Ata Meken Socialist
Party, the Unity Party of Kyrgyzstan, the Moya Strana [My Country] Party of
Action and others.

The list does not include the Party of People (Hapless), the Ar-Namys
(Dostoinstvo) [Virtue] Party, the Adilet [Justice] Party and other
movements, whose recent activities drew a lot of public attention. They
were denied the right to take part in the forthcoming parliamentary
elections because, in line with the Election Code, only the political
parties which were registered not later than one year prior to the
elections and which have stated in their rules that they will participate
in elections to the bodies of state authority can enjoy the right.
