Kyrgyz preliminary results confirm incumbent
wins elections
Text of report by the Kyrgyz news agency Kabar on 30th October
Bishkek, 30th October: The incumbent Kyrgyz president, Askar
Akayev, has mustered 74.3 per cent of the votes in the presidential
elections following the counting of 99 per cent of the votes.
The deputy speaker of the parliament, [the leader of the opposition
Ata-Meken (Fatherland) Socialist Party] Omurbek Tekebayev
has scored the closest results to Akayev with 13.7 per cent
of the votes. Thus, Askar Akayev has been elected the president
of the Kyrgyz Republic for a new term of office. The elections
were held without any serious incidents, as a whole, and the
turnout was 74.4 per cent. The chairman of the Central Electoral
Commission, Sulayman Imanbayev, has congratulated the Kyrgyz
electorate on the election of the country's president and
thanked them for their active turnout in the main political
event of the year. The Central Electoral Commission is expected
to announce the final results of the elections at 1500 [1000
gmt].
