KYRGYZSTAN ELECTION WATCH

Kyrgyz radio announces Akayev victory after all votes counted

Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev gained "a convincing victory" in Sunday's presidential elections with 74.45 per cent of the vote, Kyrgyz radio said on Monday, announcing the Central Electoral Commission's results after 100 per cent of the ballots had been counted.

"One hour ago the Central Electoral Commission, according to data by the state automated Shayloo system, announced the preliminary data of the presidential elections held in which Askar Akayev gained a convincing victory," the radio said.

"A total of 74.45 per cent of voters cast their votes in his favour; for Omurbek Tekebayev - 13.85 per cent; Almazbek Atambayev - 6 per cent; Melis Eshimkanov - 1.08 per cent; Tursunbay Bakir uulu - about one per cent; and Tursunbek Akunov - 0.44 per cent of the voters.

"A total of 100 per cent of protocols had been processed by 1600 [1100 gmt] hours and for this reason there will not be any more data on the state automated Shayloo system today," the radio said.

It these figures would be the last data on the state automated "Shayloo" system and that the final results, according the law, would be published within seven days.

"After the Central Electoral Commission has received all protocols from the seven districts and the Bishkek city electoral commissions it will pass them to the Constitutional Court. According to our constitution, the Constitutional Court must confirm them and then the final results will be announced. Then, after the announcement of the final results, not later than 30 days, within one month, the inauguration of the president has to be held," the report added.
