Tajik presidential decree sets date to hold parliamentary elections

The Tajik president issued a decree on 11th December setting the dates for
parliamentary and local elections, Tajik radio reported the same day.
Elections to the lower chamber, the Assembly of Representatives and local
representative bodies are to be held on Sunday 27th February; elections to
the National Assembly, the upper chamber, are to be held on 23rd March 2000
The following is the text of the decree as broadcast, incorporating
excerpt released out of turn:
A decree by the president of the Republic of Tajikistan on conducting
elections to the Supreme Assembly of the Republic of Tajikistan of the
second convocation, and the people's representative assembly of Mountainous
Badakhshon Autonomous Region, the people's representative assemblies of
Regions, towns and districts of the second convocation.
In accordance with Article 69 of the Constitution of the Republic of
Tajikistan, Article 27 of the Constitutional Law of the Republic of
Tajikistan on elections to the Supreme Assembly of the Republic of
Tajikistan, and Article 23 of the Constitutional Law of the Republic of
Tajikistan on elections to the local people's representative assemblies, I
decree:

1. Elections of deputies to the Assembly of Representatives of the Supreme
Assembly of the Republic of Tajikistan of the second convocation and of
deputies to the people's representative assembly of Mountainous Badakhshon
Autonomous Region, the people's representative assemblies of Regions, towns
and districts are to be held on Sunday 27th February 2000 and elections of
deputies to the National Assembly of the Supreme Assembly of Tajikistan of
the second convocation are to be held on 23rd March 2000.

2. Taking into account the requirements of Paragraph 1, Chapter 7 of Article
21 of the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Tajikistan on elections to
the Supreme Assembly of Tajikistan, the number of voters is to be
established as on average 70,000 voters in each electoral district for the
election of deputies to the Assembly of Representatives.

3. Polling stations and their electoral commissions for elections to the
Assembly of Representatives, the people's representative assembly of
Mountainous Badakhshon Autonomous Region and the people's representative
assemblies of Regions, towns and districts are to be set up in line with
Article 22 and Article 16 of the Constitutional Law of the Republic of
Tajikistan on elections to the Supreme Assembly of Tajikistan.
