Tajik Communist Party denies "behind the scenes agreement" with the government

Excerpt from report by the Tajik news agency Asia-Plus on 27th
September.

Delegates of the 24th extraordinary congress of the Communist
Party of Tajikistan held in the morning of 24th September [in
Dushanbe] adopted a decision not to nominate their candidate
for the post of president of the Republic of Tajikistan and to
support [President] Emomali Rahmonov's candidacy, proposed the
day before by the 5th congress of the People's Democratic Party
of the republic. [passage omitted: reasons for supporting
Rahmonov's candidacy, see: Voice of the Islamic Republic of
Iran, Mashhad, in Persian 1600 gmt 24 Sep 99 ]

Murod Khudoyiyev [a member of the party's presidium] has
rejected the supposition of some journalists that there is "a
backstage agreement with the government" behind the decision,
in accordance with which the government of the Republic of
Tajikistan "promised to return some of the nationalized
property to the communists" allegedly in return for supporting
Rahmonov. According to him, problems of an economic and
property nature which exist between the Communist Party and the
government of the Republic of Tajikistan are "nothing to the
Communists compared with national interests". [pasage to end
omitted: number of participants in the congress and of party
members]
