Uzbek election rallies call people to vote for incumbent president

 
Excerpt from report by Uzbek TV on 30th November

[Announcer] Meetings with broad public participation are being held in
localities to support [the two] candidates for the republic's
[Uzbekistan's] presidential elections, scheduled for 9th January 2000. As
you know, the Fidokorlar [Self-sacrificers] National Democratic Party has
nominated [incumbent president] Islam Karimov, while Abdulhafiz Jalolov's
[the head of People's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan] has been nominated by
the People's Democratic Party.

[First correspondent over video of a meeting attended mostly by elderly
people] A meeting devoted to supporting Islam Karimov's candidacy in the
elections for the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which will be
held on 9th January 2000, was held at Tashkent's Islom-Obod neighbourhood
today. Those who spoke at the meeting noted the great achievement gained in
our country over the years of independence. Taking into account proposals
voiced during the meeting, it adopted an address to all the electorate to
cast their votes for Islam Karimov.

[Second correspondent over video of rally of young people, holding
pictures of president, placards] Students gathered in a rally which was
held at the Hamid Olimjon theatre square in Samarkand also expressed their
intention to support the head of our state, Islam Karimov, in the elections
for the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan which will be held on 9th
January 2000.
