Text of report by Uzbek TV on 6th December
[First correspondent] Today, the chairman of the Central Electoral
Commission [CEC], Najmiddin Komilov, met the OSCE limited election
assessment mission to the parliamentary elections of the Republic of
Uzbekistan headed by Ambassador Madeleine Wilkens. Najmiddin Komilov
reported about elections to the country's supreme legislative body and
noted that elections were held on democratic principles, candidates were
nominated from different parties and initiative groups and stood in
elections in accordance with the law on elections. This proves that the
process of democratization is being developed in Uzbekistan. The results of
the elections will be published within 10 days.
In her turn the OSCE representative expressed her thoughts on the
preparation process and the holding of the parliamentary elections.
[Second correspondent] The OSCE representatives have been observing the
election process since October this year. As we expected they have made
their conclusions and this was the topic of conversation at a meeting
between OSCE representatives with journalists today, the first day after
elections. The views of this mission on the elections were interesting for
both foreign and local media representatives. Representatives of the OSCE
headed by Madeleine Wilkens said that they had assessed all aspects of the
election campaign and elections.
[Wilkens in English with Russian translation overlaid] As we said initially
there have been many improvements in the legislative structure since the
first independent elections which this country had in 1994. We are pleased
to note that the first steps towards democracy had been taken during the
years of independence.
In January next year, the OSCE will publish a special full report about the
election process in Uzbekistan including recommendations on the results of
elections.
