Uzbek TV election campaign coverage: round-table discussion

On 3rd September Uzbek TV carried a special evening programme
entitled "At the Central Electoral Comission ahead of
parliamentary elections", featuring a round-table discussion
with Deputy Chairman of the Uzbek Central Electorate Commission
Otaboy Doschanov and two members of the commission, Obid
Hamroyev and Khudoyberdi Abdullayev. The Central Electoral
Commission officials praised the good preparations for the
upcoming parliamentary elections, which are scheduled for 5th
December 1999. Doschanov said that "great work has been done in
Uzbekistan concerning the electoral legislation", adding: "We
can consider this fact as a great achievement scored by
Uzbekistan in the years of independence."

In the 17-minute programme the two other guests noted that
Uzbekistan's electoral legislation met international standards
of "perfection". They said the new electoral law would ensure
fairness in the election campaign.

(Note: Names are captioned on screen. The 'Akhborotnoma'
bulletin, the official organ of the Central Electoral
Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan, spells Doschanov's
first name as Ataboy, and Abdullayev's as Khudayberdi; the
spellings given above, as in the captions, would be correct for
Uzbek. Previous bulletins mention Oblaqul Hamroyev, not Obid
Hamroyev, as a member of the commission)
