Uzbekistan: Energy Privatization Plans Derailed by Economic Crisis

The Uzbek State Property Commission is suspending attempts to privatize key energy stations.

Stakes in thermal power plants in Tashkent and Syrdarya have been up for grabs for years, CA-News.org reported on May 28. But authorities now admit the global economic crisis has scuppered attempts to attract investors.

"We do not exclude the involvement of foreign investors in the energy sector, but now is not the best time," the news agency quoted a source in the State Property Committee as saying.
