The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) may be behind the murder of a top Tajik police officer, investigators believe.
Saidumar Saidov, 39, head of the Criminal Investigation Department in Isfara, a major town in the northern Sughd Region, was ambushed outside his apartment on September 18. "All the shots were fired by a professional," Rahmonali Davlatov, the head of the Tajik Internal Security Directorate, was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency Itar-Tass.
Investigators have "serious grounds" for suspecting IMU involvement, the report added. Interior Minister Abdurakhim Kakhorov is personally leading the investigation, the Avesta news agency reported on September 20.
A Makarov pistol and two cartridges were recovered from the crime scene. Isfara is situated just a few kilometers from the Kyrgyz and Uzbek borders in the Tajik portion of the Ferghana Valley.
