The Afghan Ministry of Defense says it has "credible information" that the Taliban is preparing for a surge of its own in northern and western portions of Afghanistan.
"We have credible information that militants plan to destabilize the situation in the north and west of the country," Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi, the ministrys spokesman said.
Militants operating in Kunduz, Baghlan and Faryab, near the Tajik and Uzbek borders, come from Central Asia, the news website Afghanistan.ru quoted Azimi as saying on September 30. [For background see the Eurasia Insight archive].
The authorities are "taking very serious measures" to limit the threat, the report added.
