DEPUTY REGIONAL COORDINATOR, IREX

IREX, a nonprofit in international education and training, seeks a qualified professional to fill the position of Deputy Regional Coordinator for the Internet Access and Training Program (IATP) sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US State Department.

ABOUT IREX:

IREX is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge. Central to its mission is the empowering of individuals and institutions to participate meaningfully in civil society. IREX administers programs between the United States and Eastern Europe, the New Independent States (NIS), Asia, and the Near East.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Deputy Regional Coordinator will be based in Almaty, Kazakhstan with substantial travel throughout the region. The position requires substantive experience coordinating international assistance programs with knowledge in utilizing Internet technology as an educational and training tool. IREX seeks a minimum one-year commitment beginning August 27, 2001.

The Deputy Regional Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating the establishment of multiple Internet access centers across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan;
  • Developing and implementing program outreach and publicity to targeted audiences, specifically ECA alumni;
  • Coordinating program activities with field and DC staff as well as local and international organizations involved in Internet development;
  • Assisting in the implementation of open grants competitions;
  • Coordinating the administration of special program initiatives including the development of community Internet networks;
  • Coordinating the work of partner institutions in ensuring program sustainability and;
  • Assisting in the implementation of mid and final program evaluations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two-three years experience with international assistance and development programs;
  • An understanding of LAN architecture and hardware preferred;
  • Fluency in Russian or local language required;
  • Experience in using the Internet and integrating information technology resources in professional and educational settings;
  • Well-organized, skilled at handling multiple tasks, detail-oriented;
  • A minimum of one-year experience working and living in the NIS;
