Almost a Century Later, Greeks Hold Mass at Sümela
On August 15, a Greek Orthodox mass took place for the first time in 87 years in Sümela monastery, a 1,624-year-old complex perched high in the mountains of northeastern Turkey. But the ceremony was much more than a religious service. For hundreds of the Greek faithful whose families once lived in the area, it was about a homecoming; a chance to gain greater recognition for their culture within the country many of them still consider home.
