Children Faint during Festive Events in Ashgabat
On May 18 Turkmenistan celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Constitution and the Day of Revival, Unity and Makhtumkuli’s Poetry. Since President Berdymukhamedov was expected to be present at the festivities, many schoolchildren were brought from Ashgabat to greet him. They were forced to stand out in the streets from 4:00am until noon without any food or water, some fainting during the heat of the day, and others, unable to go without water so long, running to nearby fountains, only to be chased away by policemen who said the water was not drinkable. Some children suffered heat strokes. Presidential security services prohibit participants of mass events from holding anything unrelated to the festivities, including sun umbrellas or bottles of water; sunglasses are also not allowed. The rehearsals began three weeks in advance, for 2-3 hours every day after classes, in which children had to line up, march, and chant. This is a typical practice and happens before every holiday or festive event.
