Turkmenistan’s Delegation Attends Regular Meeting of Heads of SCO Member States
On June 5- 7, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov lead a governmental delegation in the People's Republic of China for the 12th summit of the Council of Shanghai Cooperation Organization. On June 6, Berdymukhamedov met with Chinese President Hu Jintao, who said he believes Berdymukhamedov’s visit will give a strong new impulse to the relationship between the two countries. Turkmenistan’s President said that, as a neutral state, Turkmenistan is ready to take an active role in the regional and inter-regional cooperation projects of the SCO. At the visit, the delegation will discuss prospects for boosting trade, economic, and cultural relations; it will exchange views with its Chinese interlocutors on current issues in global challenges related to strengthening peace, stability, and global security.

Ashgabat, Beijing to Establish Cooperation in Training of Servicemen
President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov received the Chinese delegation headed by Chief of General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Chen Bingde. The parties discussed prospects of cooperation in the training of servicemen and the exchange of experiences between staff of military and law enforcement agencies.

CIS Heads of Government signed a number of joint documents in Ashgabat
Following the meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council that took place in Ashgabat on May 30, the CIS Heads of Government signed a number of joint documents, including a Concept of Liberalization of Financial Services in the CIS, an agreement on cooperation in organizing an integrated currency market for the CIS countries, amendments to the agreement on power systems in the CIS countries, regulations for the operator of the interstate innovative cooperation program up to 2020, an agreement on industrial cooperation, an agreement on establishment of the CIS Coordinating Board for Quarantine of Plants, a strategy on the development of hydro-meteorological activities, a strategy on the development of physical culture and sports up to 2020, an agreement on cooperation in the sphere of engineering support for the Armed Forces of the CIS, and amendments to the documents governing registration of third-country nationals entering the territory of the CIS.

President Berdymukhamedov Receives Russian Prime-Minister Medvedev
President Berdymukhamedov met with Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, who arrived in Ashgabat to participate in a meeting of the CIS Heads of Government. During the meeting, the President said that Russia occupies the third place in Turkmenistan’s total trade turnover over the first three months of 2012, reaching 1.235 billion . Medvedev said that trade between the two countries is diverse and expanding. The parties also discussed cooperation in security of global energy supplies and optimization of transport flows in Eurasia.

President Berdymukhamedov Met with CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev
On May 29, President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov received the Executive Secretary of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Sergei Lebedev, who arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the meeting of CIS Heads of Government. During the meeting the parties discussed prospects for cooperation and named trade and the economy, information technologies, and agriculture as key spheres for cooperation on the territory of the Commonwealth. They also noted possibilities for partnership in the transportation, communication, and energy spheres.

OSCE Supports Workshop on Cross-border Gas Trade in Ashgabat
The OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, in co-operation with the Office of the Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities (OCEEA) and the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), organized a workshop on energy diplomacy. Key principles and concepts of cross-border gas trade were the topics of the OSCE-supported workshop that ended on May 31 in Ashgabat. The international participants included experts from the EU, the US, Canada; Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Research (UK), Simon Pirani; Senior Adviser of ConocoPhillips (US), Harry Sullivan; representative of SNR Denton UK LLP (Great Britain), David Tenant; independent consultant from Canada, Sohayb Kádár, as well as Adviser on energy issues of the OSCE/OCEEA, Richard Wheeler, and acting head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat, Begonia Piñeiro-Costas.

OSCE Centre in Ashgabat Organizes Visits to Estonia and Netherlands on Handling Individual Complaints
On May 31 representatives of the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan completed an OSCE-organized visit to Estonia and the Netherlands on practices in processing individual human rights complaints and communications. The two-day visit was organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat in co-operation with the Office of the Chancellor of Justice of Estonia and the Office of the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands. The participants of the exchange program shared their experiences with handling human rights complaints and communications, paying particular attention to the electronic processing of individual complaints and communications.

Ashgabat Holds Conference on Financial System Globalization
Ashgabat hosted the international conference "Globalization of the financial system and inter-regional criteria for its sustainable development," organized by the Turkmen government together with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. Representatives of the IMF, World Bank, EBRD, IDB, ADB, the International Finance Corporation, Citibank, Deutsche Bank, China Development Bank, Turkish Central Bank, national banks of Switzerland and Belgium, the trade chamber of the Russian Federation, and companies such as De La Rue, The Royal Mint Limited, Cleave & Company Ltd, and Giesecke & Devrient GmbH attended the event.

USAID and Chevron Conducted Seminar on Hospitality Business in Turkmenistan
The seminar “Standards and Quality in Hospitality Industry: International Experience and its Application in Turkmenistan,” held in the Avaza resort on the Caspian coast, was organized by Junior Achievement Worldwide, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and Chevron Nebitgaz. The seminar convened governmental representatives, the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan, and international experts from the resort and tourism industry and hospitality management.

Turkmenistan to Participate in World Economic Forum in Istanbul
The Minister of Economy and Development of Turkmenistan, Baimyrat Khodjamammedov, will attend the World Economic Forum on the Middle East, North Africa, and Eurasia, to be held in Istanbul on June 4-6, 2012, which will convene about 1,000 participants from 70 countries. The theme of the forum is "Roadmaps for Reform, Pathways to Inclusive Growth."

275 Foreign Delegations Visited Turkmenistan in Five Months
275 foreign delegations visited Turkmenistan from January to May, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov reported at a regular government meeting. At the same time, 272 Turkmen delegations traveled abroad. During the period, Turkmenistan participated in 16 inter-ministerial political consultations and five meetings of intergovernmental commissions, which focused on the development of bilateral economic and trade relations.
