Fifth Volume of Berdymukhamedov’s Works Published
The fifth volume of the selected works of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, “Towards New Heights of Progress,” was published. The book contains Berdymukhamedov’s keynote speeches, scientific articles, interviews, statements and addresses in 2011.

“Leader of the Nation” Photo Album Printed for Berdymukhamedov’s 55th Birthday
A new book entitled “Leader of the Nation” was published in Turkmenistan and dedicated to the 55th birthday of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The photographs appear alongside excerpts of statements made by the head of state in Turkmen, Russian and English.

Best Theaters Receive 50,000 USD from the Turkmen President
Ten leading theaters in Turkmenistan will each receive 50,000 U.S. dollars from the Charitable Foundation of the President of Turkmenistan. President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov announced this decision on June 27 at the opening night of the opera “Makhtumkuli,” which marked the Day of Workers of Culture and Art.

Turkmen Organizations Subscribe to Foreign Periodicals
The Ministry of Communications of Turkmenistan will sign contracts with Rospechat agency and Informnauka Ltd. (Russian Federation) for a subscription to foreign periodicals for the second half of 2012. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov signed a decree to this effect “for the purposes of studying and adapting foreign achievements and experience in the areas of science and technology, the economy, education, healthcare and other spheres into the national economy.”

Turkmenistan Destroys More Drug Hauls
A large consignment of drugs, seized during special operations conducted by law enforcement and the military authorities of Turkmenistan, was destroyed in Kasamly Dzhulge, near Ashgabat, Turkmen Dovlet khabarlary reported. Representatives of leading international organizations, including the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the OSCE, accredited diplomatic missions and public organizations, witnessed the destruction of more than 635 kilos of drugs.

Show Trials in Turkmenistan
The Soviet-era practice of holding show trials for individuals accused of relatively minor economic crimes is alive and well in Turkmenistan, and local observers say that once in the system, defendants have no chance of a fair hearing. For the state, it is a demonstration of power, and for the security agencies, an opportunity to show they are fighting crime. The latest such trial took place in the northern town of Dashoguz, and involved nine workers at a printing house, including the deputy director, who were convicted and imprisoned for stealing paper and using it for private print jobs.

Reshuffling in Turkmenistan Diplomatic Corps
On June 26, during a Cabinet meeting, President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov made some changes in the country’s diplomatic corps. Turkmenistan’s Ambassador to the German Federal Republic, Halnazar Agahanov, was appointed Ambassador to Latvia. Sapar Berdyniyazov was released from his position of Ambassador to Pakistan due to appointment to another job. Former Ambassador to Afghanistan, Atajan Movlamov, was appointed Ambassador to Pakistan. Khemra Togalakov was removed from the position of Consul to Iran and appointed Ambassador to Afghanistan. Serdarmamed Karajaev was released from the position of Consul to Afghanistan and appointed Consul to Iran. Former vice-consul to Afghanistan, Khoja Ovezov, was appointed Consul to Afghanistan.
