Turkmenistan Promises Gas from Gigantic Field to Europe and Asia
Turkmenistan announced that it is ready to begin extracting gas from Galkynysh -- the second largest gas field in the world, and to send it to Europe and Asia along the routes supported by the US, despite that circumventing Russia may complicate Turkmen-Russia relations. “Galkynysh will be ready for commercial gas extraction next year,” – said a Turkmen official at the margins of the international oil and gas conference taking place in Ashgabat this week. “Currently we are building three refineries, and two of them will definitely be completed in January – February,” the official said.
Turkmenistan is planning to build two new pipelines for transporting gas from Galkynysh and Southern Yolotan gas fields. One of the pipelines will go to India and Pakistan; the other will go through the Caspian to the European Union, enabling Europe to reduce its dependence on Russian energy.

US: Central Asia is an Important Region in Global Energy Picture
According to US Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Lynne M. Tracy, who spoke at the Turkmenistan International Oil and Gas Expo in Ashgabat, Central Asia is an important region in global energy picture, "Its substantial energy resources are well-placed to feed the growing demand of European and Asian markets," she said, adding that Central Asia is poised to become an increasingly important supplier of an array of energy resources, from hydrocarbons to hydropower, and even uranium.
Tracy mentioned that Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and the EU continue to negotiate an agreement to build a Trans-Caspian pipeline to export Turkmen gas to Europe. The US supports the Trans-Caspian pipeline, Tracy said; ”we confirm the proposition that if Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan agree on a pipeline that crosses only their territorial waters, no other country has veto power over that decision." Tracy expressed the support of the US for continued progress on the proposed Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline.
