Russia Against Disorder on the Caspian
On December 1, Russian ambassador to Turkmenistan, Alexander Blokhin, warned that if some Caspian littoral States ignored the opinions of the others, it would lead to “complete disorder and create another hotbed of tension.” He made this statement about the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project on the eve of the CIS meeting of the Heads of State, in Ashgabat, adding that this pipeline would not significantly contribute to Europe’s energy security, and was more political than economic in nature. Blokhin raised environmental concerns and emphasized that the five littoral states have not come to any agreement on the status of the Caspian Sea.
