Turkmenistan at the Bottom of Index of Economic Freedom
The Wall Street Journal and the US-based The Heritage Foundation, in their annual Index of Economic Freedom placed Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan at 162 and 169 respectively among the countries ranked as “repressed.” Rankings are based on four main criteria: trade freedom, business freedom, investment freedom, and property rights.

Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan Present “Extreme Risk” to Investors – Survey
Investors operating in three post-Soviet Central Asian republics face an “extreme risk” of having their businesses expropriated, according to a survey released last week in the UK.
Maplecroft, a Bath-based political risk consultancy think-tank, said on January 9 that it had found plenty of reasons to be wary of the business climate in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan after “evaluating the risk to business from discriminatory acts by the government that reduces ownership, control or rights of private investments either gradually or as a result of a single action.”

Media: Turkmenistan may provide fuel for Chinese, Russian, Iranian and European markets
Turkmenistan has more than enough hydrocarbon resources to provide fuel for China, Russia, and Europe in the near future, says a report from Turkmenistan’s State Information Agency (TDH). “As confirmed by international experts on the quantities of hydrocarbon resources in Turkmenistan, which is more than 71 billion tons of standard coal (or oil equivalent), it is appropriate to emphasise that this volume is more than sufficient to meet the future needs of China, Russia, Iran and Europe together,” the report says.

Chemical industry - one of Turkmenistan’s fastest growing industries
Turkmenistan’s chemical industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the country’s economy with a huge resource potential, according to the annual report of the Turkmen State News Agency (TDH). A large industrial complex with annual capacity of 400,000 tons of ammonia and 640,000 tons of urea is being built in the vicinity of the town of Mary (eastern region). The project will contribute to the increase in the annual production of nitrogen fertilizers to one million tons and will increase export opportunities. Turkmenistan is also building a number of other chemical factories and facilities.

Facilities worth $ 5 bln built in Turkmenistan in 2012
Despite the global crisis, Turkmenistan did not scale back its construction plans, President Berdymukhamedov said at a government meeting. He added that some 397 large facilities worth over $ 5 billion were commissioned in 2012, including new gas turbine stations, several new industrial enterprises, railway stations, bridges, complexes of the National Institute of Sports and Tourism and the State Oil and Gas University, the facilities of Avaza tourism resort, food processing plans, apartment buildings, recreational and entertainment center,s and many other social and domestic facilities. Last year, a record number of educational facilities were commissioned for the first time since the country’s independence. Around 36 secondary schools were equipped with multimedia technologies.
