Turkmenistan's Ministry of National Security Questions Students
Turkmen students studying in Turkey have experienced pressure from Turkmenistan’s National Security Ministry (NSM) during their summer holidays at home. The NSM summoned students studying at the University of Anatolia, Istanbul University, and Fatih University and questioned them about their attitude towards the mass protests in Turkish cities. The NSM officers inquired whether students or their acquaintances took part in the protests and if they heard about other Turkmen students had done so. They were also warned that if the situation in Turkey did not stabilize by September, they would likely be barred from exiting the country and continuing their studies in Turkey. More than 4000 students from Turkmenistan are enrolled in government-sponsored educational programs in Turkish universities.
