On July 21, President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov sent his government on a 10-day holiday and took a short break himself, fishing on the Caspian. The practice of sending the government on a 10-day holiday is a legacy of Berdymukhamedov’s predecesor, the dictator Saparmurat Niyazov, who sent his subordinates to vacation on the Caspian for a “collective journey.” On July 24, Berdymukhamedov resumed his head-of-state duties, travelling to Chisinau for talks with Moldova’s President Nicolae Timofti. Before his own vacation, on July 19, Berdymukhamedov received China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, in Ashgabat, to discuss the agenda of the upcoming autumn visit of the Chinese President China to Turkmenistan. He had also met with Sony’s Executive Vice-President, Shoji Nemoto, to discuss possible deals in media, communication systems, and medical equipment supplies; with Toshiba Medical Systems’ President and Chief Executive, Satoshi Tsunakawa; Vice-President of the Turkish company Cotam Enterprises, Seda Genguru, which is interested in contracts with Turkmenistan’s textile industry and medical sector; and the Head of the Turkish company Chalyk Holding, Akhmet Chalyk, which currently has a number of active construction projects in the country.
