/17:47 05.06.2002/ Status of Caspian Sea will be determined by littoral states, US
Envoy said
Baku, June 5, 2002. (CNA). "The solution of the Caspian issue is very important for
Washington as well. But since we are not Caspian region state we do play a role of
observer," Steven Mann, the US envoy to Caspian region said. According to the US
Envoy, it was the interior affair of five littoral states to determine the status
of the Caspian Sea. Challenge for the negotiation by regional states is
appreciated.
ANS informed citing the Envoy that the US do hope that problem will be solved
peacefully and transportation issue of the energy products will be cleared once and
far all. He did make clearance for his words said during the press-conference in
Baku, June 4.
"The status affair of the Caspian sea could become lengthened with months or years.
I didn't mean concrete period of time. I want everybody to understand how important
and significant was the solution of the problem" Mr. Mann stressed. US envoy said
that, the 9th international oil and gas conference and exhibition held in Baku, was
very important for the region. The participation of the leading oil companies of
the world proves it.

/16:36 05.06.2002/ Iran proposes joint gas projects to Azerbaijan, Turkey,
Turkmenistan
Baku, June 5, 2002. (CNA). A representative from Iran has called on Azerbaijan,
Turkey and Turkmenistan to implement joint projects to produce and transport
natural gas to the world markets, Interfax reports.
Akhmad Rakhgozar, vice president of the Iranian National Oil Company, said at the
international conference Caspian Oil and Gas 2002 that total reserves of oil and
gas in these countries would meet requirements in European countries for
hydrocarbons.
Rakhgozar noted that Iran supports projects to transport Caspian oil to the world
markets through its territory or by schemes to exchange oil in the Caspian and
Persian Gulf.
He said that the use of Iranian infrastructure and territory to transport oil would
reduce transport costs by $2 per barrel. At the same time he drew the attention of
European countries to Iranian gas, reserves of which amount to 15% of the world's
total, and called for the implementation of projects to transport Iranian gas to
Western Europe, Pakistan and India.

Defense Minister Ivanov
Ankara, June 5, 2002. (CNA). The Turkish Chief of Staff Gen. Huseyin Kivrikoglu met
with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov and Russian Chief of Staff Gen. Anatoli
Kvashnin. Kivrikoglu and Ivanov discussed "bilateral military and military
technical cooperation" besides other hot issues according to a statement of the
Russian Defense Ministry Press Office.
Turkish Daily News reports that the parties also discussed cooperation
opportunities in struggling against international terrorism and exchanged views
over the Chechnia issue. According to the statement, "The various organizations,
foundations and associations which are active in Turkey and give financial support
to the guerillas in Chechnia, was also debated during the meeting."

/14:15 05.06.2002/ French president assured Heydar Aliyev that France would
accelerate mediation activity in settling Karabakh conflict
Baku, June 5, 2002. (CNA). The French President Jacques Chirac stressed in his
letter addressed to Azeri president Heydar Aliyev that France
would continue the active mediation for peaceful settlement of the Karabakh
conflict.
"You can always rely on my own pledge to find a solution of the Karabakh problem by
means of peace and negotiations"-is stated in the letter. Jacques Chirac assured
his Azeri colleague that during his second presidential term he would make efforts
to strengthen the relations between Baku and Paris.
