/18:24 19.06.2002/ Iran and Turkey to develop cooperation in military sphere

Tehran, June 19, 2002. (CNA). In the course of the Turkish President's visit to
Iran the leaders of the two states said they supported developing cooperation in
the military and security spheres, which would contribute to stability in the
region, IRNA reports. Iranian President Khatami stressed that Iran and Turkey were
undertaking steps to create conditions, under which "the enemies of the two
countries will not feel secure being either on Iranian or Turkish territories."
Turkish President Sezer stressed that there were no problems on the way of
developing the relations between Teheran and Ankara. "We want to develop relations
with all our neighbors, and first of all with Iran," - he noted.

/18:08 19.06.2002/ KIO plans to invest $3.5 bln at Karachaganak by 2003

Alma-Ata, June 19, 2002. (CNA). Karachaganak Integrated Organization (KIO) plans to
invest $3.5 million in a project to develop the Karachaganak gas condensate field
in Kazakhstan and to increase liquid hydrocarbon production there to 7 million
tonnes per annum.
KIO is a joint venture between BG, ENI (32.5% each), ChevronTexaco (20%) and Lukoil
15%.
A source in the KIO press service told Interfax that it is planned to increase
production by building additional production and export capacities.
KIO works at Karachaganak under a contract for the development of this field from
1998 to 2038.
A total of $160 million, from various sources, was invested in the field from 1995
to 1997.
Construction at Karachaganak in the period from 1998 to 2003 should include a gas
processing plant, a power plant with a capacity of 240 megawatts and three
high-pressure compressors. In the coming year it is planned to launch the
Karachaganak-Atyrau export pipeline, which stretches 650 kilometers and which will
subsequently be linked to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium pipeline. It is also
planned to repair a unit for the separation of liquid hydrocarbons next year, with
a capacity of 4.6 billion cubic meters of gas and 4.7 million tonnes of condensate
per annum.
Gas production at Karachaganak in 2001 amounted to 3.75 bcm (4.6 bcm in 2000), with
condensate production of 4 million tonnes (4.6 million tonnes). This year KIO plans
to increase production to 4.7 bcm and 5 million tonnes respectively.
It is planned to set up additional capacity to increase condensate production at
Karachaganak to 12 million tonnes per annum by 2008.
Reserves at the Karachaganak field, which is being developed under a production
sharing agreement, are estimated at 1.2 billion tonnes of oil and condensate and
1.35 trillion cubic meters of gas.

/18:06 19.06.2002/ US State Secretary assistant continues his visit to Central
Asian states

Bishkek, June 19, 2002. (CNA). On June 19-20, 2002 US State Secretary assistant
Lynn Pasco will visit Bishkek.
The main goal of his visit is to get acquainted with the current military-political
situation in the Central Asia, to discuss the further cooperation of USA with the
regional countries, within the framework of antiterrorist coalition in particular.
During the visit L.Paskoe will meet President Askar Akaev, Prime Minister Nikolay
Tanaev, Minister of Foreign Affairs Askar Aitmatov. During the negotiations the
sides will discuss the process of antiterror campaign in Afghanistan and prospects
of postconflict rehabilitation of Afghanistan. It is expected that the sides will
also discuss perspective of Kyrgyz-American bilateral cooperation in militay
sphere.
During the visit the US diplomate will meet the Secretary of Security Council Misir
Ashirkulov, will visit Gansy base of coalition forces at the airport "Manas".
The US State Secretary Assistant is visiting Kyrgyzstan within the frames of his
tour on Central Asia, after visiting Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

/17:57 19.06.2002/ EBRD to sign $40 million Uzbek SME credit line

Tashkent, June 19, 2002. (CNA). Government of Uzbekistan has adopted a decree on
implementation of the programme of the European Bank of Reconstruction and
Development (EBRD) on full-scale development of small business. The programme
approves attraction of the EBRD credit line worth $40 million.
The programme is directed at financing small private manufactures in the spheres of
services, processing local raw materials and agricultural products as well as
creation of additional workplaces, Uzreport says.

/17:54 19.06.2002/ Turkish, Armenian and Azerbaijani journalists continue to their
joint initiative

Ankara, June 19, 2002. (CNA). Following a four-day-long gathering in Ankara,
Turkish-Armenian and Azerbaijani journalists expressed satisfaction with the
constructive and productive atmosphere at their talks, brought about by their joint
initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to further enhance their collaboration,
Turkish Daily News reports.
In a press memorandum declared on June 18 in Ankara, Yusuf Kanli of Diplomacy
Correspondents Association (DMD), Murat Sengul of the Turkish Democracy Foundation
(TDV), Ashot Melikyan of Yerevan Press Club (YPC) and Arif ALIEV of the Yeni Nesil,
expressed the upcoming plans for continuing the joint initiative, which became a
serious point concerning the peace initiatives vis-a-vis the disputes in the
Caucasus.
Meeting in Ankara between June 14 and 18 as part of their trilateral "Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Turkey: Journalists Initiative 2002," the three journalistic
organizations defended peaceful resolution of all regional problems and welcomed
all initiatives aimed at eradication of disputes through dialogue.
They reaffirmed their belief that development of regional cooperation in the
information sphere was the right platform for enhancing prospects for the
resolution of existing problems.
Stressing the importance of their trilateral dialogue and exchange of opinions that
have been successfully maintained to this day, and underlining that continuation of
their dialogue is in the best interest of the public of the three countries, the
three organizations stress:
For regional peace and stability the duty of the media is to support and encourage
positive developments;
In order to develop their cooperation and collaboration, the three organizations
will prepare their further proposals and submit them to the scheduled fall
trilateral meeting;
The electronic news group established between the three organizations and their
members with the hope and intention of boosting efficient exchange of information
and professional cooperation, has made it possible to arrange "cyber work shops."
The three organizations will try to utilize this opportunity;
Development of relations and an atmosphere of understanding among the media
organizations of the region is an important leg of establishing peace and stability
in the region. With this consideration, the three parties will assess the
possibility of inviting Georgian journalists to their trilateral fall meeting as
"observers."
The three organizations have undertaken to prepare papers on major issues of their
countries, present to other organizations and thus provide firsthand information to
the members of the three organizations on "sensitivities," "parameters" and
"mentality" in their three countries.
Kivanc Galip Over of the Secretary-General of the DMD made a presentation over the
"View of Turkish Media on the Development of Azerbaijan - Armenia Relations."
Representing the Armenian press, Levon Barseghyan, President of "Asparez"
journalists' club of Gyumri made a speech about "The current state and the future
of Azerbaijani-Turkish relations as mirrored by the Armenian media."
And Teymur Abbasov was the Azerbaijani journalist from the Media Monitoring Group
of Baku Press Club spoke about the "Perspectives of Development of Relationship
between Armenia and Turkey as seen by the Azerbaijani Media."

Tbilisi, June 19, 2002. (CNA). About 300 soldiers from 14 countries showed thier
shooting skills during the third day of Cooperative Best Effort 02 exercises, which
are being held within the frames of NATO's Partnership for Peace Program.
The exercises started Jube 17 in Vaziani, close to Tbilisi, and will last till June
28.

/17:42 19.06.2002/ Uzbekistan taking part in JETRO foreign investment exhibition

Tashkent, June 19, 2002. (CNA). Uzbekistan presented its production at the 10th
exhibition of foreign investmentsm which is being held in Tokyo. The Exhibtion is
organised by Japanese foreign trade organisation (JETRO). More than 150 companies
from Asia, Europe, North and South America, Middle East and Africa presented their
production at the Tokyo International Exhibition Centre. The CIS states are
represented by Uzbekistan, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
Light industry and textile products are the main spheres of Uzbekistan's industry
presented in Tokyo. During the ezhibition the representatives of the state will
present information about the privatisation process in Uzbekistan, investment
opportunities and privileges for foreign investors, development of tourism industry
of the country.

/17:31 19.06.2002/ General Director of Georgian bank kidnapped

Tbilisi, June 19, 2002. (CNA). Peter Shaw, a 59-year-old British businessman and
General Director of Georgia's Agro Business Bank, has been kidnapped from the
centre of Tbilisi.
According to Georgian Interior Minister Koba Narchemashvili, the banker was
kidnapped Tuesday evening while driving his car across the center of the city.
Three armed people in police uniform stopped his car, dragged him out and were
forcing him into their own car when a police patrol appeared. At the same moment,
the kidnappers were joined by four armed accomplices, who initiated an armed clash.
Eventually, the kidnappers disappeared along with their victim.
The incident was reported to the Georgian interior ministry, which immediately
sealed off all roads leading out of the city. So far however, the search has been
fruitless.
The interior minister assured journalists that everything was being done to find
and liberate Shaw. According to his words, the law enforcing authorities have
mobilized police forces not only in Tbilisi but throughout the whole country, RIA
Novosti reports.

Yerevan, June 19, 2002. (CNA). The Armenian foreign minister Vartan Oskanian met
with the OSCE envoys who are visiting the South Caucasian region on a fact-finding
mission ambassadors of Dutch and Belgian to the OSCE Justas de Viser and Ms.
Danielle del Marmoli.
The sides were focused on discussion of regional issues, ways to overcome the
exiting conflicts, as well as Armenia's relations with the neighbor countries.
Armenian-Turkish dialogue was also discussed during the meeting.
