/15:00 26.06.2002/ Tashkent did not leave GUUAM, it suspends its membership in the
organization, Spokesman of Uzbek Foreign Ministry said

Tashkent, June 26, 2002. (CNA). The Spokeman of the Uzbek Foreign Ministry
confirmed the statement by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Anatoly Zlenko who
stressed that Tashkent "has not pulled out of GUUAM, but has suspended its
participation in its measures at this stagehas suspended its membership in GUUAM.
Tashkent will closely watch the developments in this organization," the Spokesman
added.
As it was reported earlier the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Anatoli Zlenko stated in
Istanbul that Uzbekistan's statements on its intentions to leave GUUAM were
misinterpreted.
During the informal meeting of Georgian, Azerbaijani, Moldavian and Ukrainian
Foreign Ministers Zlenko stated that "Uzbekistan does not intend to pull out from
the organization." He also added that soon the Foreign Ministry of Uzbekistan would
release a new statement that will clarify misunderstanding.
In fact, on June 14 the Uzbek Foreign Ministry Abdulaziz Kamilov came forward with
a statement saying that Tashkent was intented to leave GUUAM because it saw no
progress on the tasks set by the organization.
GUUAM was formed in 1997 as a political, economic and strategic alliance.

/14:46 26.06.2002/ Institute of ombudsmen may be formed in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, June 26, 2002. (CNA). The Legislative Assembly of the Kyrgyz Parliament
has adopted a Law "On Ombudsmen". Deputy Tursunbai Bakir informed journalists, that
in case if the law is signed by the President in July, the election of Ombudsmen
will be held in November, 2002. According to the Law, a citizen of the republic may
be elected to the post of Ombudsmen for 5 year period.
The Ombudsmen Institute will be financed from the republican budget. 7 draft laws
are submitted for consideration of the parliament. The Decree of the President "On
introduction of the Ombudsmen Institute" was signed in the beginning of 2001, Kabar
News Agency reports.

/14:37 26.06.2002/ Turkish state minister visiting Uzbekistan

Tashkent, June 26, 2002. (CNA). Reshat Dogru, the Turkish State Minister for Turkic
countries arrived on June 25 in Uzbekistan for a two-day official visit.
CNA correspodent informs from Tashkent that the Turkish State Minister held talks
with the Uzbek Minister for Foreign Economic Relations Elyor Ganiev and signed a
protocol on cooperation between Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations of
Uzbekistan and Turkish Agency on Cooperation and Development (TIKA). All aspects of
ecomomic cooperation between two states were touched upon during the meeting. The
sides also discussed ways of attraction of investments from Turkey to the Uzbek
economy.
Today the Turkish State Minister will continue his visit to the Central Asian
states leaving for Kyrgyzstan.

/14:24 26.06.2002/ BSEC leaders condemned terrorism, urge for further cooperation

Ankara, June 26, 2002. (CNA). The leaders of the 11 member states of the Black Sea
Economic Cooperation countries declared that the BSEC became an evidence for a
cooperation between the states with difference in belief and culture. At the end of
the decennial anniversary summit of the BSEC, a joint statement was made by eight
presidents and three ministers participating at BSEC summit held in the Istanbul
Ciragan Palace. The joint statement condemned terrorism which negatively effected
the market economies as well as the multilateral and bilateral cooperation. BSEC
countries once more emphasized the determination to take all necessary steps
against terrorism and all illegal activities. Relevant BSEC institutions and
national authorities were invited to pay importance for the implementation of the
agreement for struggling against organized crime and to look for new fields of
cooperation.
The global geostrategic importance of the Black Sea region which is located in the
heart of Eurasia was emphasized as the final deceleration. However, the difficulty
in front of mutual transaction of the potential existing for the BSEC, was also
mentioned in the final statement.
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer in his statement at the opening of the summit
indicated that the BSEC has reached to an institutional structure and by all means
became an international organization. Sezer made reference to the fact that the
BSEC states realized 5 percent of the world trade with $300 billion.
The Black Sea Economic Cooperation opinion came on the agenda in the transformation
medium after the collapse of the Eastern Block in the 1990s, at the region which
includes 20 million square kilometer geography and 400 million people. And this
year stability and peace in Caucasus put its mark to the BSEC summit.
Sezer met with the Georgia's Eduard Shevardnadze and Romania's Ion Iliescu, and it
was also scheduled that Cem will meet with his Greek counterpart Papandreau today,
Turkish Daily News reports.

/13:54 26.06.2002/ Lithuanian defense Minister visiting Georgia to discuss military
cooperation between two states

Tbilisi, June 26, 2002. (CNA). Today, Linas Linkevicius, Lithuanian Defense
Minister arrived to Georgia to hold talks with the top officials of Georgia.
The Georgian Defense Ministry reports that the Lithuanian Minister will discuss
with the top military officials of Georgia bilateral cooperation between the both
states. The Minister also will take part in closing ceremony of Cooperative Best
Effort - 2002 NATO exercise, which is held in Georgia in the frames of the
Partnership for Peace program on June 17-28.
