MORE SUPPORTERS OF ARMENIAN PRESIDENTIAL CHALLENGER ARRESTED
Some 20 members of the campaign staff of opposition People's Party of
Armenia (HZhK) Chairman Stepan Demirchian were arrested on 27 February,
raising to at least 155 the number of people known to have been
apprehended for participating in demonstrations in support of
Demirchian, RFE/RL's Yerevan bureau reported. But an Armenian Justice
Ministry official told RFE/RL the same day that 69 of the detainees have
already been released. The wives of two Demirchian campaign activists
who were taken into custody in the town of Armavir on 22 February have
been unable to establish the whereabouts of their spouses. Other HZhK
officials have gone underground to avoid arrest. LF
