ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT SHELVES DEBATE ON MEDIA BILL
At the request of the Armenian government, the parliamentary leadership
on 31 March postponed until 15 April a scheduled debate on a
controversial media bill, RFE/RL's Yerevan bureau and Noyan Tapan
reported. No reason was given for the postponement. Meanwhile, some
journalists congregated outside the parliament building on 31 March to
protest the bill, criticizing it as "undemocratic" and accusing the
Armenian leadership of seeking to restrict freedom of speech. The bill
requires media outlets to disclose their sources of funding and empowers
courts to demand that journalists reveal their sources of information.
