World Bank happy with judicial reform in Georgia

Excerpt from report by Georgian news agency Prime-News

Tbilisi, 2 May: Friedrich Peloschek, the World Bank's senior legal counsel,
who is in charge of Georgia's judicial reform implementation, has given a
positive assessment to the changes introduced within the country's judicial
system over the past three years.

Georgia is one of the leaders among the former Soviet countries in this
regard, Peloschek said at a news briefing held on Thursday [2 May] at the
Supreme Court of Georgia. He pointed out that this was not a compliment
because he had worked with judicial systems in various countries and knew
those systems well.

According to Peloschek, he has been greatly impressed with considerable
progress in the judicial system as well as erudition of judges.

The reform has been implemented as scheduled and the World Bank is satisfied
both with the results and a targeted disbursement of earmarked funds,
Friedrich Peloschek said. According to him, work done by the Georgian
judicial system is so effective that the World Bank has even saved money on
allocated funds, and the disbursements have been completely transparent.

The World Bank has provided Chairman of the Supreme Court Lado Chanturia
with new recommendations and conclusions, the World Bank's legal counsel
said. These recommendations are not mandatory and courts can decide whether
they want to carry them out or not...
